About ethics and applied ethics

Draw upon thousands of years of thinking about the nature of ethics, morality and decision-making and put them to use in contemporary contexts. Ethics is one of the most applied philosophical disciplines. Also known as moral philosophy, it’s based on centuries of thought around the general nature of ethics – also known as meta-ethics – as well as the foundation upon which people should make moral decisions (normative ethics). Building on these theoretical elements of ethics, applied ethics seeks to put thought into practice in a variety of fields, such as healthcare, business, personal relationships, the environment, animal welfare, social policies and international relations. Study ethics and applied ethics and you’ll learn to employ a range of ethical frameworks and philosophical concepts – including metaphysics, epistemology and philosophical anthropology – to the real world, adding immeasurable value to your skill set and career path.

Pick your philosophy pathway

Your can take your interest in ethics and applied ethics almost anywhere. Combine a degree philosophical studies with a degree in theological studies (Bachelor of Theology/Bachelor of Philosophy) or Law (Bachelor of Philosophy/Bachelor of Laws – available from 2020). Alternatively, you can major or minor in philosophy as part of a Bachelor of Arts. Looking to advance your studies? Postgraduate coursework is available as part of the Graduate Certificate/Diploma in Theological Studies, as well as the Master of Theological Studies as a specialisation. Higher degree research opportunities include the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
